Roma's history
Roma were born in 1927 from the fusion of three different clubs - Alba, Fortitudo and Roman. A fine record in the 1930s eventually led to the first Giallorossi Scudetto in 1942.

Difficult years followed until their one and only relegation in 1951. With an immediate return to the top flight, Roma quickly captured a third place and the 1961 UEFA Cup. The Coppa Italia came in 1964, the first of seven in this competition.

Roma’s most glorious years were the 1980s as aside from the two Italian Cups, the club’s second Scudetto was lifted by Coach Nils Liedholm in 1983. The following year only a penalty shoot-out against Liverpool at the Stadio Olimpico kept them from winning the European Cup.

Fabio Capello’s Roma led the 2000-01 Serie A table from start to finish for their third Scudetto and the club’s first medal in a decade.

The Giallorossi were handed a Champions League spot after a superb season including a record-breaking run of 11 consecutive wins. Luciano Spalletti will look to work his magic again as his side start the season 2006/2007 as Inter’s main rivals.
Trainings facility
The boys have their trainings sessions at the Trigora complex. This lies a bit outside of Roma. It is a big complex with a swimming pool, a gym, a nice restaurant and good pitch where the guys train.

A lone strike from former Roma and Lazio striker Roberto Muzzi proved enough to snatch a shock away victory.

The Giallorossi rested several stars after their 6-2 demolition of Inter and looking ahead to the second leg of that Coppa Italia Final next Thursday. Francesco Totti started upfront despite a sleepless night as he welcomed his second child, a daughter named Chanel, into the world at 4.20am. The captain needed at least four goals to win the Golden Shoe for top scorer in the European Leagues this term.

There was a lot more at stake for Torino, who were one of eight teams within a three-point radius of the relegation zone. They had lost their last six meetings with Roma and Gianni De Biasi had beaten Luciano Spalletti just once in 11 attempts. Toro's last win at the Olimpico was a spectacular 5-4 result on May 9, 1993. With Elvis Abbruscato injured and Roberto Stellone not 100 per cent fit, Roberto Muzzi led the line.

Christian Abbiati needed his first save from Rodrigo Taddei after 12 seconds and in the opening two minutes he parried a Totti snapshot.

It was Torino who took the lead with ex-Roma and Lazio striker Muzzi. Cristian Chivu was at fault, as he stumbled on a Matteo Ferrari pass, allowing the Granata veteran to go one-on-one with Gianluca Curci.

Totti and Simone Perrotta had shots charged down by the Toro bunker, then Mirko Vucinic felt he deserved a penalty for a Franceschini challenge.

Taddei was very unlucky when he got in front of the defence for a glancing header that smashed against the crossbar from Max Tonetto's assist.

Totti skipped past three defenders before he was stopped in the box and, despite dominating possession, Roma failed to really trouble Abbiati.

Taddei was unlucky to hit the woodwork for the second time in the game, as his drive rose to clip the crossbar from a tight angle.

Marco Cassetti's season could be over, as he clattered knee against knee with Di Loreto and the Roma man got the worst of it, stretchered off. As all the substitutions had been completed, the Giallorossi had to play the final eight minutes with 10 men.

Yet Aleandro Rosi drilled just wide of the far top corner from the edge of the box and in stoppages Mirko Vucinic thumped the upright, but it was not enough to turn the situation around.

Francesco Totti (Roma)
If there were any lingering doubts remaining that Totti would recover his form after that fractured ankle, then they were washed away under the lights of San Siro. Class, creativity and a sense of positioning that shows why he can be used as a lone striker, Er Pupone bagged both goals in an historic victory away to Milan and hit the upright. With Totti in this condition, Roma can keep those Scudetto ambitions alive.

Alberto Aquilani (Roma)
The youngster has been impressing for some time and deservedly earned his first call for the senior Azzurri side in the friendly against Turkey, but the Milan game is one he’ll always remember. The substitute changed the face of the match and his classic ‘rabona’ – crossing his legs to chip the ball with his back foot – inspired Totti’s winning goal. A star is born.

Manchester United FC advanced to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in thrilling fashion as they swept AS Roma aside 7-1 at Old Trafford.

Four-goal salvo

A goal behind from the first leg, Sir Alex Ferguson's men blew their opponents away with four first-half strikes from Michael Carrick, Alan Smith, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo. Further efforts after the break from Ronaldo, Carrick and Patrice Evra completed a remarkable 8-3 aggregate success for a United team who will fear neither prospective semi-final opponent, AC Milan or FC Bayern München, after this display.

United first

For United, it was the first time they had overcome a first-leg deficit in Europe since 1984 and a famous fightback against FC Barcelona. Yet this victory, achieved without a handful of regulars, carried echoes of a more recent triumph, namely their 1999 UEFA Champions League win. Captain Ryan Giggs, the only survivor of that side starting the contest, created four of the goals as United produced arguably their best European performance since that glorious campaign - when they secured their only previous Italian scalps, beating FC Internazionale Milano and Juventus.

Eyebrow-raiser

Funny to think that there were raised eyebrows before kick-off with Sir Alex's decision to begin with Alan Smith up front in a 4-2-3-1 formation. On a high-stakes occasion, Smith's selection was an undoubted gamble, the striker not having made a single start in the UEFA Champions League or Premiership since suffering a broken left leg and dislocated ankle 14 months ago.

Whirlwind start

Smith would reward his manager's bold move during a whirlwind opening by United, who, as if galvanised by the electric atmosphere inside Old Trafford, turned the tie on its head with three quick-fire goals. Carrick dented the floodgates irrevocably with a spectacularly-struck first European goal on eleven minutes. There seemed little danger to the Roma defence as Ronaldo slipped the ball inside from the right but the England midfielder left Doni for dead with a cute chip from outside the box.

Rooney strike

United's second after 17 minutes showed the Premiership leaders at their high-speed best. Breaking from their own half, Gabriel Heinze played the ball infield to Giggs who in turn slid it through to Smith, cutting out Cristian Chivu in the process. Smith, without a goal in 17 months, ended his long wait with a cool finish high to Doni's left. Old Trafford erupted. And before Roma had time to recover, they were three down. Giggs surged down the right and sent a low ball across goal which Rooney turned in off the far post.

Ronaldo finish

Daniele De Rossi headed wide from a David Pizarro free-kick as Roma sought a response but United kept coming. Ronaldo shot narrowly past the far post, then, with half-time approaching, Carrick sliced wide when it looked easier to score. It did not matter. A minute before the interval, the superb Giggs sent Ronaldo racing down the right and the Portuguese drilled a low effort between Doni and his near post.

Goal flurry

Four minutes into the second half it was five. Following a half-cleared corner, Giggs turned the ball back across goal and Ronaldo popped up at the far post to score. Pride forced Roma forward and Darren Fletcher blocked Mancini's goalbound header but things only got worse for the visitors as Carrick curled in the sixth from 20 metres on the hour. Although De Rossi then volleyed in a Francesco Totti cross, Evra compounded the Italians' misery with a low drive for United's seventh.

Roma have one hand on the Coppa Italia after crushing Inter 6-2 in the first leg! Only Hernan Crespo's brace gives the Nerazzurri hope from the highest scoring Final ever.

Roberto Mancini's men beat Roma in the last two consecutive editions of this Final, so the Giallorossi knew they were the underdogs and that this was their only remaining challenge for this season, having already secured second place behind the Scudetto winners. Luciano Spalletti's men came flying out of the blocks.

Within 90 seconds they had taken the lead at the Stadio Olimpico. Rodrigo Taddei cut back low from the by-line and Francesco Totti shook off a defender to sweep home from eight yards.

It was 2-0 to the home side when former Inter midfielder David Pizarro's corner kick found a Philippe Mexes volley and decisive deflection from six yards off Daniele De Rossi. The Inter defence was once again caught napping.

Moments later Toldo punched away a Rodrigo Taddei rocket, then both Totti and Simone Perrotta failed to turn in a Christian Panucci cross, as Roma were running riot down the right flank.

Taddei saw Toldo off his line and the lob was off target, then hooked down a Totti searching pass, cutting back for Amantino Mancini to blast over. The goalkeeper comfortably smothered a Pizarro snapshot, as Inter seemed to be shell-shocked.

By the 15th minute Roma had snatched a third goal. Cristian Chivu found space down the left and his low pass rolled across the face of goal where Perrotta stuck out a foot to poke it into the far bottom corner past Toldo's outstretched hand.

When these two sides met at San Siro for the Italian Super Cup back in August, the Lupi were 3-0 up at the half-hour mark only to end up losing 4-3 in extra time. Inter were unbeaten on their travels in 23 official matches.

There were memories of that Italian Super Cup comeback when Inter got one back on 20 minutes. Pizarro's appalling backpass was intercepted by Hernan Crespo, the former Lazio striker keeping his cool to slide a precise finish past the stranded Alexander Doni.

A Luis Figo free kick was cleared with some difficulty as that goal finally woke the Nerazzurri up.

However, it was Roma who restored their three-goal cushion with Inter transfer target Mancini. Toldo only pushed a cross off the head of Perrotta at the near post, leaving Mancini to dive on to the loose ball from six yards.

Perrotta was about to net a fifth as he ran on to Panucci's pass, but was judged to have been pushed by Douglas Maicon on the very edge of the box. Totti drilled the resulting free kick just past the post.

Another terrible defensive error allowed Totti to shoot, comfortably held by Toldo, and a fine team move was intercepted at the last moment. At the other end Adriano's hopeful effort barely tickled Doni, but Inter had a fantastic chance with Figo's strike denied by the upright.

Figo was the liveliest of his team and only had another shot charged down by the attentive Mexes just before the break.

Roma made a more attacking substitution after the break, Marco Cassetti coming on for the injured Mexes (calf muscle) to push Chivu into the centre. Adriano's snapshot from 30 metres was pushed round the near post by a surprised Doni.

Patrick Vieira came on for Figo in only his second appearance since February, but Ivan Cordoba needed some brave defending to stop Pizarro completing a triangle with Perrotta inside the area. From the resulting corner kick, Panucci was allowed a free header into the near top corner for Roma's fifth.

But within 60 seconds Inter got their second away goal with that man Crespo, his fourth goal against the Giallorossi this season. A defensive error from substitute Cassetti let Maicon clear for a cross that Crespo nodded in from six yards.

Alvaro Recoba replaced the disappointing Adriano, but Mancini's effort was deflected wide off Materazzi. Roma continued to pour forward and Totti's angled drive went through Materazzi's legs to be fingertipped inches round the post by Toldo.

Fabio Grosso came on for Maxwell as Roberto Mancini's last substitution, but Cordoba was booked for a cynical foul to halt Perrotta's counter-attack, blatantly shoulder-charging him with no attempt to play the ball.

Taddei intercepted a pass on the D and Mancini skimmed the base of the upright. Alberto Aquilani has missed five months of the season with injury and replaced the injured Taddei. The substitution was originally for Pizarro, but changed at the last second as the Brazilian asked to be taken off.

Within seconds Aquilani's spectacular overhead kick pass was volleyed over by Totti. Recoba aimed at the goal with his weaker right foot, bringing a tough save out of Doni. Olivier Dacourt was booked and will be suspended for the second leg and Vieira saw yellow for a horrible high tackle on De Rossi.

Pizarro went off with cramp for Max Tonetto. In the final minutes, Javier Zanetti brought down Mancini. Totti took the free kick, a central cannon that Toldo only pushed off the line, straight into the path of Panucci for his second of the game. This is the top scoring Final in Coppa Italia history!

Roma weren't giving in and Perrotta had a volley charged down from nine yards and Materazzi went through the back of Totti, also ruling him out of the second leg.

De Biasi: Let’s conquer Roma
Torino boss Gianni De Biasi has reminded his men of just what they are playing for against Roma this weekend. “We need to win to stay in Serie A,” he said.

The Granata are just two points above the drop zone, with three matches to go, and travel to the capital on Sunday to take on a Roma side who have nothing left to play for in the League after securing second.

“We are still missing that kind of result which happens just once a season,” noted the Toro tactician.

“When I coached Brescia I defeated Lazio in Rome and also Inter, matches that no one thought we could ever win…

“I know it will not be easy, but we must try to achieve such an important result. It is logical that I respect our opponents, but we need to complete such a feat.”

De Biasi is confident that his men’s determination and will to do well can make the difference, as proved in Sunday’s win over Ascoli.

“The players are aware that they will determine their own destiny and it is vital to face this situation with the right attitude,” added the man sacked in pre-season for Alberto Zaccheroni before being recalled.

“Our will and determination can lead us to the final goal. We now must have trust in our potential and qualities.”

Torino President Urbano Cairo confirmed on Tuesday that the Coach will be handed a new contract as soon as the club is mathematically sure of a Serie A future.
Luciano Spalletti is not counting Roma’s chickens despite a 6-2 first leg lead in the Coppa Italia Final.

“We have to consider this the first half and there will be a struggle for the second,” said the Coach after the thrashing of Inter at the Stadio Olimpico.

He has reason to be concerned, as back in August the Giallorossi were 3-0 up at San Siro in the Italian Super Cup against the same team only to end up with a 4-3 defeat in extra time.

“It’s already happened in the past that we have conceded a lot of goals in a short period of time after having been in the lead,” added Spalletti.

“We will enjoy this advantage, but not rely on it when we go to San Siro, as that would be a mistake against a great side like Inter.”

Hernan Crespo’s brace – both gifted by defensive errors – has given Inter some hope of turning it around in the second leg on May 17 at the end of the highest scoring Coppa Italia Final in history.

“From the start of the year we occasionally get too sloppy when we go in front and again gave away two silly goals that made it complicated for us.”
